Google Defines an SEO Audit in One Sentence. Most Audits Fail It.
SEO audit services exist to answer one question: what is actually stopping this site from ranking, and what would it take to fix. Google has published its own definition of what an audit should give you, and it is one sentence long. We have quoted it below and built this page around it, because almost everything sold in this market as a full site SEO audit report fails that sentence on both halves. We are an SEO audit company in Vikaspuri, West Delhi.
| An estimate of the improvement | ✓ Google asks for it |
| An estimate of the work involved | ✓ Google asks for it |
| A list of 170 flagged errors | not mentioned |
| A score out of 100 | not mentioned |
| A 60 page PDF | not mentioned |
We Hold the Report to Google’s Own Definition
Google says an audit should give you realistic estimates of improvement and an estimate of the work involved. Every finding in our report carries both. If we cannot estimate the gain from fixing something, that is a strong sign it does not belong in the report.
The Report Is Yours, With No Strings
You can hand it to your in-house developer, to your current agency, or to a competitor of ours. It is written to be executed by somebody else, because an audit that only works if you also hire the auditor is a sales document.
We Tell You What We Checked and Found Fine
Most reports only list problems, which makes a healthy site look broken and a broken site look thorough. We list what we examined and found no issue with, so you can see the shape of the whole check.
We Ask for Read Access Only
Google’s guidance on hiring an SEO is explicit about this, and we follow it. At the audit stage we do not need the ability to change anything, so we do not ask for it.
Findings versus decisions
Why Most Audit Reports Cannot Be Acted On
A Report That Counts Errors
- ✗The report opens with a score out of 100That number comes from a third party tool. Google has stated plainly that it does not evaluate or endorse third party SEO tools and that they have no access to its internal ranking data. The score is not Google’s view of your site.
- ✗Every flagged item is treated as a problemA crawler flags things it can detect, not things that matter. Reporting all of them is easier than deciding between them, and it makes a thin piece of work look substantial.
- ✗No finding has an effort estimateSo you cannot tell the difference between a ten minute change and a three week rebuild, which means you cannot plan, budget or decide anything from it.
- ✗The descriptions are the tool’s own wordingCopied straight from the exported report, generic to every site on the internet. Nothing in those paragraphs was written by somebody who looked at your business.
- ✗The recommendation at the end is a retainerThe audit was the opening move rather than the deliverable. You can usually tell because the report is vague in exactly the places where a specific instruction would let you act without the agency.
A Report That Estimates Work
- ✓There is no score, and we explain whyA single number cannot carry the difference between a broken canonical setup and a missing image description. We give you an ordered list instead, which is the thing a score is a poor summary of.
- ✓Findings that do not matter are removedDeciding what to leave out is most of the work and it is the part you are actually paying for. A shorter report is usually the more expensive one to produce.
- ✓Each item carries effort and expected gainHours or days, and what we think it moves. Both are estimates and we label them as such, but a labelled estimate is far more useful than no estimate at all.
- ✓Everything is written against your siteYour templates, your URLs, your actual pages. Where a finding needs a code change we write what the change is, not a description of the category of problem.
- ✓The last page tells you what to buy next, including nothingSometimes the honest answer is that the site is fine and the problem is the market, the offer or the content. We would rather write that than invent a programme.
What the data shows
Four Numbers Before You Buy an Audit
Two of these come from Google’s own guidance on hiring an SEO, and two from the public pricing and documentation of the tools that most audits are produced with. Together they explain what you are really paying for, and what you should refuse to pay for.
1
The number of sentences Google needs to define what an audit should give you
From Google Search Central, in the official guidance on whether you need an SEO and how to hire one. The sentence reads: an SEO audit should be about giving you realistic estimates of improvement, and an estimate of the work involved. Read it twice, because it contains two requirements and almost no commercially sold audit in this market satisfies either. An estimate of improvement means somebody judged what fixing each thing would be worth. An estimate of the work means somebody judged what fixing it would take. A list of errors exported from a crawler contains neither, because producing it required no judgement about your business at all. This single sentence is the most useful thing a buyer can take into a conversation with any SEO audit company India wide.
170+
Issue types a popular site audit tool scans for before any human looks at it
Ahrefs states that its Site Audit scans for more than 170 issues. Semrush describes its equivalent as checking for over 140 website issues. These are capable tools and we use them, so this is not an argument against the software. It is an argument about what the output is. A crawl that flags 170 categories of issue will find something on every site ever built, which is why the raw export always looks alarming and always looks thorough. Google addresses this directly in the same hiring guidance, stating that it does not evaluate or endorse third party SEO tools and that these tools do not have access to Google’s internal ranking data. So a score or a grade produced by one is a measure of that tool’s opinion, not of how Google sees you.
500
URLs the most widely used crawler will cover at no cost whatsoever
The free version of Screaming Frog SEO Spider crawls up to 500 URLs, with the paid licence at USD 279 a year for unlimited crawling. Most of the business websites being audited in this market are well under 500 pages. This matters because the crawl is the artefact that usually gets sold as the audit, and for a typical site it costs the seller nothing to produce and about ten minutes to run. We are not saying the tools are worthless. We are saying something narrower. When an audit is priced at twenty five thousand rupees and the deliverable is an exported crawl with a cover page on it, you have paid for ten minutes of work. The judgement you needed was never applied.
Read only
The level of access Google tells you to grant an SEO at the audit stage
Also from the same Google guidance, and it is unusually specific. It says to only grant read access to Search Console, and adds in brackets that at this stage you should not grant write access. We follow it, which means at audit stage we cannot change your settings, submit anything, or alter your property even by accident. We have put this on the page deliberately, because it is advice that limits what we are able to do and most agencies would rather you did not read it. If anyone asks for write access, ownership transfer or admin rights before an audit has even been delivered, that is worth questioning.
Sources: the definition of an audit, the position on third party tools and the read access instruction are all from Google Search Central, Do you need an SEO. Issue counts from the Ahrefs Site Audit page and the Semrush Site Audit issues list. Crawl limit and licence cost from Screaming Frog pricing.
Two things we deliberately left out. A figure for what share of flagged issues actually affect rankings, because it varies enormously by site and every published number we found was an agency estimate presented as research. And a comparison of which audit tool is most accurate, because we have not tested that rigorously ourselves and repeating other people’s vendor comparisons would be guessing with a citation attached.
Five Checks on an Audit Report You Already Have
Five checks on an audit report you have already paid for. They take about fifteen minutes and will tell you whether you bought judgement or an export.
- Count the findings that have an estimate of how long the fix will take
- Count the findings that say what fixing it is expected to gain you
- Check whether the report tells you what order to do the work in
- Search the report text for a sentence that could only have been written about your site
- Look for anything the auditor checked and declared fine
The first two come straight out of Google’s sentence, and they are the ones that usually come back as zero. The fourth is the quickest tell. If every paragraph would read identically on any website in your industry, nobody examined your website. The fifth matters more than people expect. A report containing only problems gives you no sense of scale, and a website SEO health check that cannot tell you what is healthy is not a health check.
Our process
A Seven Step Audit
Agree the Question Before Anything Else
Audits go wrong when nobody defines what is being asked. Are you losing rankings you had, failing to gain ones you want, or checking that an agency is doing its job? The answer changes the entire shape of the work.
Take Read Access and Pull the Real Data
Search Console and analytics, read only. This is the only data in the whole exercise that comes from Google rather than from a third party estimate, so it anchors everything else.
Crawl the Site, Which Is the Quick Part
Ten minutes with a crawler gives us the raw inventory. We say openly that this step is cheap, because the rest of the page argues that it is routinely sold as though it were the whole job.
Compare What Exists With What Google Has
The gap between the pages on your site and the pages Google holds is where the most valuable findings live. Where that gap is the main story we will point you at our technical SEO services, since fixing it is a different engagement.
Read the Pages That Should Be Winning
Manually, against the queries they target and against whoever is beating them. This is slow, it cannot be automated, and it produces findings no crawler will ever flag.
Throw Out Everything That Does Not Matter
The decisive step. Most flagged items on most sites are noise, and separating the few that are not is the judgement you are paying for rather than the list you are receiving.
Write It as a Plan With Numbers Attached
Ordered by what we think it gains against what we think it costs, with both stated as estimates. This is the step that makes the report something your developer can start on Monday.
Focused, Full or Audit With Implementation
The column you need depends on whether you already know roughly what is wrong. If you do, a focused audit answers one question properly and costs less than a full one that tells you things you knew.
| Focused | Full | With Implementation | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shape | One question | Whole site | Audit plus the fixes |
| Best for | A known symptom | No clear diagnosis | No internal dev time |
| Manual page review | Key pages only | Yes, across templates | Yes |
| Competitor comparison | Not usually | Yes | Yes |
| Walkthrough call | Yes | Yes | Ongoing |
| Who does the fixing | You or anyone | You or anyone | Us |
The middle column is the one most businesses need and the one we recommend by default. The third is not a better audit, it is the same audit with the work attached, and it is only worth paying for when you have nobody internally who can act on the findings. If you do have a developer, the first two columns are better value and the report is written for exactly that situation.
What you get
What You Get
A document somebody can actually work from, with the effort and the expected gain written next to each item, and the raw data behind it so you can check our reasoning.
A prioritised findings list
Ordered by expected gain against expected effort, with the reasoning for the order written down so you can disagree with it.
An effort estimate on every item
In hours or days, flagged as an estimate. Enough for you to budget, schedule and decide what to skip.
An expected improvement estimate
What we think fixing it moves, and how confident we are. The honest entries sometimes read as minor and we leave them that way.
Developer ready instructions
The actual change, in your templates, with URLs. Not a description of the category of problem.
A clean list of what is fine
Everything we checked that turned out healthy, so you can see the scope of the check rather than only its failures.
The raw crawl data
The export itself, handed over. It is the cheap part of the job and there is no reason to hold it back from you.
A query and page gap analysis
What you rank for, what you should, and which pages are closest to winning something commercially useful.
A recommendation on what to buy next
Which service the findings point to, if any, including the answer that you do not need one from us.
A walkthrough call with whoever will do the work
Usually your developer. The report should survive without the call, but the call saves them a week of interpretation.
Who This Is Built For
SEO analysis services are worth buying at specific moments rather than on a schedule. These are the situations where an audit earns its fee instead of confirming what you already suspected.
Sites that lost rankings and nobody knows why
The clearest case for an audit. Something changed, and the useful question is what, which needs data rather than opinion.
Businesses paying an agency and seeing nothing
A second opinion from somebody not being paid to find the previous work satisfactory. We will tell you if the agency is doing fine, which does happen.
Before a redesign or a replatform
The cheapest audit you will ever buy, because findings arrive while they are still design decisions rather than migration problems.
After a migration that went badly
Traffic dropped at launch and has not recovered. Usually diagnosable, often quickly, and the fix is frequently smaller than feared.
Companies about to commit to a retainer
Spending a modest amount to find out what you need is better than spending a monthly fee to find out you did not need it.
Sites that have never been looked at properly
Built once, added to for years, never examined. These audits tend to produce the largest gains for the least effort.
Anyone handed a report they cannot act on
You paid, you received a PDF, and nothing in it tells you what to do first. Bring it to us rather than buying another one.
What actually changes
What Changes in Practice
An audit does not improve anything by itself, and it is worth being blunt about that before you buy one. What it changes is the quality of every spending decision you make afterwards. How it fits into a full programme is set out on our SEO services page.
You stop paying for work you do not need
The most common saving. Businesses routinely buy the service they have heard of rather than the one their site requires, and a diagnosis costs less than a wrong retainer.
Your developer can start without interpreting anything
A finding written as a specific change in a named template gets done. A finding written as a category of problem sits in a backlog for a year.
You can judge your current agency on evidence
Not on reporting they produce themselves. An independent read of the same data is the only way to settle that question fairly in either direction.
You find out what is already fine
Which is worth knowing. A lot of anxiety about search performance turns out to be about the offer or the market rather than the website.
What an Audit Looks Like Week by Week
A full audit, week by week. Illustrative rather than a contract, and the slowest part is deliberately the thinking rather than the data collection.
Day 1: Scope and access
We agree the question the audit is answering and take read access to Search Console and analytics. Nothing more than read access at this stage.
Day 1 to 2: Collection
Crawl, performance data, index comparison, competitor pulls. All the mechanical work happens here and it is the fastest part of the job.
Day 3 to 5: Manual review
Reading your actual pages against the queries they target. This is where findings appear that no tool reports, and it cannot be hurried.
Day 5 to 7: Discarding
Going through everything flagged and removing what does not matter for your site. The report gets considerably shorter at this stage.
Day 7 to 9: Estimating
Effort and expected gain attached to every surviving finding, then the whole list reordered by the two together.
Day 10: Delivery and walkthrough
The document, the raw data, and a call with whoever will do the work. Then it is yours to execute with us or without us.

Our SEO audit report price is set by how much manual reading the site needs, which is driven by the number of distinct page templates rather than the number of pages. A thousand product pages built from one template is a smaller job than forty pages that were each built by hand. Tell us roughly how your site is put together and we can price it properly in one message.
On free audits, since you will be offered many. We run a free SEO checker on this site and it is genuinely useful for a first look. It is also automated, which means it does the cheap part and none of the expensive part. Use it, and use the free tools from the large vendors too. Just do not mistake any of them for the thing this page is selling, and do not pay anybody twenty five thousand rupees for output you could have generated yourself in ten minutes.
What We Will Not Do
Several of these cost us money to hold to. They are here because an audit is the one thing we sell where the incentive to exaggerate is strongest.
- ✗We will not give you a score out of 100Google states that it does not evaluate or endorse third party SEO tools and that they have no access to its internal ranking data. A score from one is not a measure of your standing with Google, and presenting it as one would be misleading however good it looks on a cover page.
- ✗We will not pad the report with findings that do not matterA crawler will hand us 170 categories of possible issue. Reporting all of them would make the document look more valuable and make it useless, and deciding what to cut is the job you hired us for.
- ✗We will not ask for write access at audit stageGoogle’s own hiring guidance says to grant read access only and specifically says not to grant write access at this point. We follow that even though it occasionally makes our work slower.
- ✗We will not make the audit conditional on hiring usThe report is written to be executed by anyone, including a competitor of ours. An audit that only functions as the first step of a sale was never really an audit.
- ✗We will not promise rankings on the back of itGoogle puts this plainly in the same guidance: no one can guarantee a number one ranking on Google. We estimate improvement, we label the estimates as estimates, and we do not dress either up as a forecast.
Where to Start
Before you buy anything, run the five checks above on any audit report you already own. If it has no effort estimates and no expected gains, you now know what it is, and you also know what to ask for next time. Then run our free SEO checker on your most important page, because the cheap part should always be done for free first.
Then send us your site address, the queries you think you should be winning, and read access to Search Console if you are comfortable granting it. We will tell you honestly whether an audit is worth buying. If you are deciding whether to hire an SEO auditor in India or go with an international agency, the question that separates them is not price. Ask each one to show you a sample report and count how many findings carry an estimate of the work involved.
SEO Audit Questions, Answered
What is included in an SEO audit?
Ours includes a prioritised findings list, with an effort estimate and an expected improvement estimate on every item. Instructions are written against your actual templates and URLs. You also get a query and page gap analysis, a competitor comparison on the queries that matter commercially, and the raw crawl data handed over. There is a clean list of everything we checked that turned out fine. It ends with a recommendation on what to buy next, including the option of nothing, and a walkthrough call with whoever will do the work. What is not included is a score out of 100, and the reason is on this page. The two items that matter most are the estimates, because Google’s own guidance says an audit should give you realistic estimates of improvement and an estimate of the work involved. Most reports sold under this name contain neither, which is the single most useful thing to check before you buy one.
How much does an SEO audit cost in India?
Anywhere from free to several lakh, and the range is wide because two completely different products share the name. At the bottom, an automated crawl export with a cover page, which costs the seller about ten minutes because the free tier of the most widely used crawler covers 500 URLs at no cost. At the top, weeks of manual review on a large and complex site. Our own pricing is published above: a focused audit answering one question runs INR 20,000 to 35,000, which is USD 241 to 422. A full audit runs INR 50,000 to 85,000, which is USD 602 to 1,024. Audit with implementation runs INR 1,10,000 to 1,90,000, which is USD 1,325 to 2,289. The honest guidance on budget is that the price should track how much manual reading your site needs, so ask any provider how many hours of human review their fee contains. If they cannot answer, the fee is for the export.
How long does an SEO audit take?
A focused audit on one question takes three to five working days. A full site audit takes eight to twelve. Audit with implementation runs six to ten weeks because it includes the work. Within that, the data collection is the fast part and usually finishes on day two. The time goes on reading your pages manually, deciding which of the flagged items actually matter for your site, and estimating the effort and gain for each of the survivors. If somebody offers you a full site SEO audit report in 24 hours, they are selling you the day two output and skipping everything after it. That is a real product, it is just not worth what they are charging, and you can generate most of it yourself.
Do I get an action plan with the audit?
Yes, and it is the actual deliverable rather than an appendix to it. The findings arrive ordered by expected gain against expected effort, with both estimates written next to each item and the reasoning for the order stated so you can disagree with it. Each item is written as a specific change in a named template or URL, not as a description of a category of problem. That is the difference between something a developer starts on Monday and something that sits in a backlog for a year. The plan is also unconditional. You can hand it to your in-house team, to your current agency, or to another agency entirely, and it will work, because it was not written to be useless without us. We will also tell you plainly which items we think you should skip, which is part of the plan too.
Is a free SEO audit tool good enough?
For a first look, often yes, and we would rather you ran one before paying anybody. We publish a free SEO checker on this site for exactly that reason. What free tools do well is the mechanical part: finding the broken things, the missing things and the slow things. What they cannot do is decide which of those matters for your business, estimate what fixing each one would take, or read your pages against the queries you are trying to win. That judgement is the whole of what a paid audit should be. So the honest position is that free tools are not a weaker version of an audit. They are the first ten minutes of one, which is why it is unreasonable for anyone to charge you twenty five thousand rupees for the same output.
What is the difference between an SEO audit and a website audit?
An SEO audit asks why search is not working and what it would cost to fix. A website audit is broader and asks whether the site is doing its job at all, which brings in usability, accessibility, analytics setup and whether visitors who do arrive convert. They overlap, but the questions are genuinely different and so are the answers. If your traffic is fine and your enquiries are not, an SEO audit will be the wrong purchase and will tell you very little. Our website audit services page covers that version. If you are not sure which you need, describe the symptom rather than the suspected cause and we will tell you which one answers it, including when the answer is neither.
What is the difference between an SEO audit and technical SEO?
The audit is the diagnosis and technical SEO is one of the treatments. An audit looks at everything, decides what the constraint actually is, and estimates the work. Quite often the answer is that crawling and indexing are the problem, and in that case the fixing is a separate engagement covered on our technical SEO services page. Just as often the technical side is fine and the pages themselves are the issue, which points at on-page SEO services instead. Sometimes the site is good and simply is not referenced anywhere. Buying technical SEO without an audit is a reasonable gamble on a site you know well, and an expensive one otherwise.
What access do you need to my site?
Read access to Google Search Console, read access to your analytics, and the site address. That is it for an audit. We ask for read access specifically because Google’s own guidance on hiring an SEO says to grant read access to Search Console at this stage and says in plain terms not to grant write access. We think that is right, and it means that during an audit we cannot change your settings or submit anything to Google even by mistake. We do not need your hosting login, your CMS admin, your domain registrar or ownership transfer of anything. If an audit provider asks for those before delivering a report, ask them what they intend to do with them.
Will you give me a score out of 100?
No, and this is deliberate rather than an oversight. Those scores come from third party tools, and Google has stated that it does not evaluate or endorse third party SEO tools and that these tools do not have access to its internal ranking data. So the number describes a tool’s opinion rather than your standing in search, while looking authoritative enough to be mistaken for the second. It also compresses genuinely different problems into one figure, so a site with one serious issue can score worse than a site with thirty harmless ones. What we give you instead is an ordered list where the top item is the thing to do first. If you need a number to report upwards, use your own search traffic and conversions, which are at least measuring your business.
Can I take the audit to another agency or my own developer?
Yes, and it is written on the assumption that you will. Every finding is specific enough to be executed by somebody who has never spoken to us, and the walkthrough call is usually with the developer rather than with you. We hand over the raw crawl data as well. There is no clause, no retained ownership and nothing held back to make the implementation depend on us. We take this position for two reasons. An audit designed to be useless without the auditor is a sales document wearing a report’s clothing. And in practice, the businesses that take our audit elsewhere tend to come back later for something larger.
We already have an agency. Can you audit their work?
Yes, and it is a fair number of the audits we run. The useful framing is not catching anybody out, it is that the people doing the work cannot also be the only people assessing it, which is true of us as well. We look at the same data independently and report what we find. Sometimes the finding is that the agency is doing a reasonable job and the expectations were set wrong at the start. We will say that clearly, even though it is the less dramatic answer. Sometimes it is that very little has happened for a long time. Either way you get the evidence rather than our opinion, and you are free to show the report to them, which several clients have done to good effect.
How often should we re-audit?
Less often than you will be told. For most businesses a full audit every eighteen months to two years is plenty. Add a focused one whenever something specific changes: a redesign, a replatform, a migration, a sudden drop, or a new section of the site. What does not justify a re-audit is the passage of time on its own, and an annual audit sold on a subscription is usually a way of re-selling the same crawl. The exception is before any migration, where an audit beforehand is the single highest value version of this purchase, because the findings arrive while they are still design decisions rather than problems to be undone afterwards.
Will the audit tell me which keywords to target?
It will tell you which queries you are already close to winning, which is more useful and far more actionable. A full site SEO audit report from us includes a gap analysis: what you currently rank for against what your pages are capable of ranking for. The pages nearest to a commercially useful position usually represent the fastest gains available. What an audit does not do is replace proper keyword research for a new content programme, which is a different exercise with a different method. If what you actually need is a content plan rather than a diagnosis, we will tell you that during scoping rather than charging you for an audit that answers the wrong question.
Does the audit cover AI search and AI assistants?
We include a section on it, and we are careful about how much we claim. Google’s hiring guidance now explicitly mentions services sold around AEO and GEO, and advises thinking critically about the claims made for them. That is sensible, given how new the field is and how confidently it is being sold. Three things can be checked concretely. Whether AI crawlers are allowed to reach you. Whether your content is structured so an assistant can extract an answer from it. And whether your business facts are stated clearly enough to be quoted. You can run that part yourself with our free AI visibility checker before you talk to us. What nobody can honestly offer yet is a reliable method for ranking inside AI answers, and we will not pretend otherwise.
Do you work with clients outside Delhi?
Yes. We provide SEO audit services in Delhi and throughout India, and work with clients in the UAE, the UK and the USA. An audit is reading, data analysis and writing, so it runs remotely with nothing lost. Clients who want an SEO auditor Delhi NCR based are welcome at the studio in Vikaspuri, West Delhi. The walkthrough is often more productive face to face, especially when the developer can join. Location genuinely affects one part of the work: the competitor comparison. The sites you compete against in Jaipur are not the ones you compete against in Manchester. We build that comparison from your actual search results rather than a generic list.

Talk to Us About an Audit
Send us your site address, read access to Search Console if you are comfortable, and the queries you believe you should be winning. We will tell you whether an audit is the right purchase at all. Sometimes the answer is visible in twenty minutes and does not need a paid engagement, in which case we will say so and tell you what to fix. If you already have an audit report from somebody else, send that instead. We will tell you which findings in it are worth your developer’s time.
