Shopify builds · Delhi NCR, India & overseas

Shopify Payments Does Not Work in India. That Costs You 2%.

Shopify website design services are the work of designing and building a store on Shopify: theme, templates, product pages, apps and the setup behind them. We are a Shopify store design agency in Vikaspuri, West Delhi, working with brands across India and overseas. Shopify is genuinely very good, and we build on it often. There is one thing about running it from India that almost nobody puts in a proposal, so we have put it in the headline instead.

Themefree, or paid from USD 100
The third row exists because Shopify Payments is not available in India. It is not a penalty for doing anything wrong, and it is not optional either.

We Put the India Fee in the Proposal

The extra percentage Shopify charges Indian sellers for using a third-party gateway goes in writing, with the arithmetic, before you sign anything. It is the single most commonly omitted number in Shopify proposals here.

We Work Out Which Plan You Should Be On

The right plan depends on your turnover, not on what the sales page suggests, and the difference runs to lakhs a year at volume. We show the calculation rather than asserting an answer.

We Use a Paid Theme When That Is the Honest Answer

A good theme properly configured beats a mediocre custom build, costs a fraction, and is easier to maintain. We will tell you when that is your situation, even though it is the smaller project.

You Own the Account

The Shopify account, the domain and the data are yours, registered to you, with us as a collaborator you can remove. We have inherited too many stores where the agency held the login.

Plan price versus real cost

Why Shopify Quotes Understate the Cost in India

A Store Quoted on the Plan Price

  • ✗The quote mentions only the plan priceINR 1,994 a month looks like the whole cost. It is the smallest part of it for most stores, and the parts that are larger never get mentioned.
  • ✗Nobody mentions the third-party gateway feeThe seller finds out about the extra percentage from their first settlement statement rather than from their agency, which is a bad way to learn it.
  • ✗Apps get added one at a timeEach one looks like a small monthly charge on its own. Eight of them is a meaningful recurring bill that nobody ever totalled.
  • ✗A custom theme is sold by defaultBecause it bills better. Often a well-chosen paid theme, configured properly, would have produced a better store sooner and for less.
  • ✗The plan is never revisitedThe store grows, the turnover passes the point where the next plan up is cheaper, and nobody notices because nobody set up the comparison.
VS

A Store Quoted on What It Actually Takes

  • ✓The quote separates build from monthly costOne figure to design and build it, and a second showing what Shopify, the gateway and the apps take every month at your current volume.
  • ✓The gateway arithmetic is done up frontWhat your gateway charges, what Shopify adds on top for a third-party provider, and what that comes to against your actual turnover.
  • ✓Apps are chosen before the build and totalledNamed, priced monthly, kept short. Anything a theme or Shopify itself already does is not bought twice.
  • ✓Theme decision made on evidencePaid theme, paid theme with custom work, or a genuinely custom build, decided by how distinctive the store needs to look and what your budget buys.
  • ✓Plan reviewed against turnoverA written note of the revenue level at which moving up a plan starts saving you money, so the decision is a date in the diary rather than an accident.

What the data shows

Four Numbers Before You Choose Shopify

Four numbers, all taken from Shopify’s own pages in October 2026. Three of them are about money and one is about themes. The first is the one that changes the arithmetic for every seller in India.

41

Countries and regions where Shopify Payments is available, and India is not one of them

From Shopify’s own supported-countries documentation, checked in October 2026. The list runs to 41 and includes the United States, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore and most of Europe. India is absent. Shopify’s page is explicit about what follows: if your country is not listed, you use a third-party payment provider. For an Indian seller that is not a preference, it is the only option, which makes the next number unavoidable rather than something you can design around.

2%

Extra charge Shopify adds on the Basic plan when you use a third-party payment provider

From Shopify’s India pricing page in October 2026. Because Shopify Payments is unavailable here, every Indian store pays this on top of whatever its own gateway charges. It falls as you move up: 2 percent on Basic, 1 percent on Grow, 0.6 percent on Advanced and 0.2 percent on Plus. So an Indian seller on Basic is paying their gateway around 2 percent and then Shopify a further 2 percent of the same order. That is roughly double what most people assume when they compare platforms, and it is the figure to put into any comparison you are doing rather than the plan price.

INR 1,994

A month for the Basic plan, before the gateway, the apps or anything else

Shopify India pricing, October 2026: Basic at INR 1,994 a month, Grow at INR 7,447, Advanced at INR 30,164, and Plus starting around INR 1,75,000. Annual billing brings the first three down to INR 1,499, INR 5,599 and INR 22,680. Here is the part worth doing arithmetic on. Moving from Basic to Grow costs about INR 5,453 more each month and saves one percent of revenue, so it pays for itself at roughly INR 5.5 lakh a month in sales. Grow to Advanced costs about INR 22,717 more and saves 0.4 percent, so that one turns over at around INR 57 lakh a month. Check those against your own numbers rather than taking ours.

24

Free themes in the Shopify Theme Store, out of 1,326 in total

Checked on the Shopify Theme Store in October 2026, which listed 1,326 themes of which 24 are free and 1,302 are paid. Prices on the browse page ran from 100 to 500 US dollars. This is the number behind our answer on custom themes, which is that most stores do not need one. With over thirteen hundred available, the odds that none fits your brand closely enough to be worth customising are low.

Sources, all Shopify’s own, checked October 2026: the Shopify Payments supported countries list, the Shopify India pricing page for plan costs and third-party provider fees, and the Shopify Theme Store for theme counts and prices.

Two notes on what we have not done. The breakeven figures above are our own arithmetic on Shopify’s published numbers, not something Shopify states, and we have shown the working so you can check it. And we have not quoted a gateway rate as fact. Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree and the rest price differently by business and by payment method, so the two percent we use for illustration is a common figure rather than your figure. Ask your gateway for yours.

Five Things to Work Out Before You Commit

Five things to work out before you commit to a Shopify subscription. The first two take ten minutes and will change which plan you buy. The last three decide whether Shopify is the right platform at all.

  • Work out your monthly sales, then check it against the plan breakeven figures above
  • Ask your payment gateway for its actual rate, then add Shopify’s percentage on top
  • Browse the theme store properly for an hour before anybody quotes you a custom theme
  • List anything your store must do that Shopify does not do out of the box
  • Decide whether you would rather pay a percentage forever or own the thing outright

The last one is the real question. Shopify is a rental, and rental is an excellent arrangement when you want somebody else handling updates, security and uptime. It is a worse arrangement at high turnover, where a percentage of everything you sell quietly becomes the largest line in your technology budget. If you would rather own it, our WooCommerce development page covers the alternative, including what that costs instead.

Our process

A Seven Step Build

01

Do the Arithmetic Before the Design

Your turnover against the plan ladder, your gateway rate plus Shopify’s addition, and what that totals in a year. If Shopify is the wrong answer for your volume, this is where we say so, and our ecommerce website development page covers how the platform decision gets made.

02

Decide the Theme Question Honestly

Paid theme, paid theme plus custom sections, or custom Shopify theme development from scratch. Driven by how distinctive the store must look and by what your budget actually buys, not by which answer bills best.

03

Fix the App List and Total It

Every requirement matched to an app or to theme code, each one priced monthly, and the list cut as far as it will go. Apps are the recurring cost people underestimate most.

04

Design the Product and Collection Templates First

These two templates carry nearly all the revenue, so they get the attention while it is fresh rather than whatever is left in the final week.

05

Build in the Theme, Properly

Custom work done in a duplicated theme with version control, using theme sections and blocks so your team can rearrange pages without calling us for every change.

06

Set Up Payments, Tax and Shipping, Then Test Them

Gateway connected and tested with real transactions and real refunds. Shipping rates and tax settings configured. Then the awkward paths, because those are the ones that cost money when they fail.

07

Launch With the Monthly Cost Written Down

Plan, gateway, Shopify’s percentage, every app and the renewal dates, on one page, with the revenue level at which you should move up a plan.

Theme Setup, Custom Design or Replatform

The column you need depends on how distinctive the store has to look and whether anything is being moved into it. Plenty of good brands never need the second column.

Theme SetupCustom DesignReplatform and Scale
ThemePaid theme, configuredPaid theme, heavily customisedCustom theme or Plus build
DesignYour brand applied to the themeDesigned templatesDesigned end to end
CatalogueUp to about 100 productsUp to about 1,000 productsLarge or complex
AppsShort, essential listChosen and configuredPlus custom app work
DataFresh catalogueFresh or simple importFull migration with redirects
Typical timelineAbout 3 to 4 weeksAbout 6 to 9 weeksFrom 11 weeks

The first column is a real answer, not a budget version. A well-chosen theme with your brand applied carefully is how a lot of very good Shopify stores are built, and the money saved is usually better spent on photography and on getting people to the site. Move to the second column when the store genuinely needs to look unlike anything else on the platform.

What you get

What You Get

A finished store on your own Shopify account, and a clear picture of what it costs you every month including the parts Shopify does not put on the pricing page.

A finished store on your own account

Shopify account, domain and data in your name, with us added as a collaborator you can remove whenever you like.

The real monthly cost, in writing

Plan, gateway rate, Shopify’s third-party percentage, every app with its charge, and what the lot comes to at your current volume.

A plan recommendation with the arithmetic

Which plan you should be on now and the revenue figure at which moving up starts saving you money.

Designed product and collection templates

The two templates that carry the revenue, designed and built rather than left at whatever the theme shipped with.

A theme your team can edit

Built with sections and blocks so your people can reorder a page, swap a banner or add a block without a developer.

Payments, shipping and tax configured

Gateway connected and tested with real transactions and refunds, shipping rates set up, tax settings configured to your accountant’s instructions.

A short, totalled app list

Every app named with its monthly cost and what it is for, so you can cancel the ones that stop earning their place.

Migration with redirects mapped

On a move from another platform, old product and collection addresses mapped one to one so the search rankings come with you.

Handover your team can use

How to add a product, change a price, run a discount and read the reports, written for your staff rather than for a developer.

Who Shopify Actually Suits

Shopify suits a particular kind of business very well, and we would rather say which before you commit to a subscription. These are the cases where it is usually the right answer.

Brands that want to sell, not administer

Shopify handles hosting, security, updates and uptime. If nobody in your business wants that responsibility, this is the strongest argument for paying the subscription and it is a very good one.

First stores that need to be live soon

A theme setup can be trading in three to four weeks, and the platform will not fall over while you work out whether the business works.

Businesses with ordinary selling rules

Standard products, standard shipping, standard checkout. Shopify does these extremely well and resists being bent into anything unusual.

Brands selling internationally

Multiple currencies, international shipping and local pricing are well handled, which matters if you are an Indian brand selling into the UAE, the UK or the USA.

Teams with nobody technical

This is the honest dividing line. If there is no one to apply updates and watch security, a hosted platform is not a compromise, it is the correct choice.

Sellers at moderate volume

At lower turnover the percentages cost less than the equivalent hosting, maintenance and developer time. That maths changes as you grow, which is why we keep showing it to you.

Businesses that value predictability

A known monthly bill and somebody else on call at two in the morning is worth real money, and a lot of platform comparisons leave that out entirely.

What actually changes

What Changes in Practice

Specific to Shopify, and separate from the general case for having a store, which our ecommerce website development page covers.

Nothing to maintain

No hosting to specify, no updates to apply, no security patching, no staging environment. For a lot of businesses this single fact justifies the whole subscription.

Live sooner

A theme setup reaches a working, trading store faster than a custom build on any platform, which matters when you are testing whether the business works at all.

A cost you can predict

Plan plus percentages plus apps is knowable in advance and does not surprise you, provided somebody actually adds it up. That is the part we insist on.

A store your team can change

Built with sections and blocks, the day-to-day edits stop needing a developer, which over a year is a real saving and a faster business.

What a Custom Design Build Looks Like

The shape of a typical Custom Design build. An illustration of sequence rather than a fixed schedule, and the arithmetic in week one is what keeps the rest of it honest.

Week 1: Arithmetic, theme and app decisions

Turnover against the plan ladder, gateway rate plus Shopify’s addition, theme chosen, app list fixed and totalled. Platform decision confirmed or reversed while it is still free to reverse.

Weeks 2 to 3: Product and collection templates

The two templates that carry the revenue, designed first. Brand applied, then the home page and the rest of the structure.

Weeks 4 to 6: Build and customisation

Theme duplicated and worked on properly, custom sections built so your team can rearrange pages later, apps installed and configured.

Weeks 7 to 8: Catalogue, payments and testing

Products imported from structured data. Gateway connected and tested with real transactions, refunds and cancellations. Shipping and tax set up.

Week 8: Your team and the cost document

Walkthrough with the people who will run it daily, and the monthly cost page written and gone through with you line by line.

Week 9: Launch and watch

Go live, not on a Friday, then stay close through the first real orders and the first settlement so the numbers match what we told you.

Shopify store design cost India wide covers an enormous range, from a few thousand rupees for somebody installing a free theme to several lakh for a Plus build, and both are honest products for what they are. Shopify development price with us is set by how much design and custom work is involved, not by your turnover.

Three things move the price inside a band. How much of the store is designed rather than configured. The number of products once variants are counted. And whether you are migrating, because mapping old addresses to new ones properly is real work and skipping it is how brands lose their rankings in a replatform.

What We Will Not Promise You

Shopify is the easiest platform to oversell, because the demo always looks good and the plan price looks small. Here is what we will not claim.

  • ✗We will not hide the third-party gateway feeIt is in the proposal with the arithmetic. Any Shopify quote in India that does not mention it is either uninformed or hoping you will not notice, and neither is a good sign.
  • ✗We will not sell you a custom theme by defaultWith over thirteen hundred themes available, a custom one needs a reason beyond wanting to look different. Sometimes that reason is real and we will build it. Often it is not.
  • ✗We will not promise Shopify beats WooCommerceIt depends on your turnover, your requirements and whether anyone will maintain the alternative. We build both, we have no partnership incentive either way, and the recommendation follows the arithmetic.
  • ✗We will not promise a conversion rateA good store removes friction. It does not create demand, and anybody quoting you a conversion figure before seeing your products, prices and delivery promise is guessing.
  • ✗We will not take your store live on a FridayA small thing we hold to. Launches generate problems and problems need people available to fix them.

Where to Start

Start with the first two checks above, which cost nothing and take about ten minutes. Work out your monthly sales and compare them against the plan breakeven figures in the numbers section. Then ask your payment gateway what it actually charges you and add Shopify’s percentage on top. Those two sums tell you more about whether Shopify suits your business than any demo will.

Then send us your product count, your order volume and your turnover. We will tell you which plan you should be on, what the store will really cost each month, and whether we think Shopify is the right platform for you. If you are about to hire a Shopify expert in India, ask each of them what the third-party gateway fee will cost you at your volume. The ones who have not thought about it are telling you something useful.

Shopify Questions, Answered

How much does a Shopify store cost in India?

There are two costs and they get confused constantly. Design and build with us runs from INR 85,000 to INR 7,00,000 depending on how much is designed rather than configured, and the three tiers above set out what sits in each band. Then there is what Shopify costs you to run, which never stops. The Basic plan is INR 1,994 a month, or INR 1,499 on annual billing, and Grow and Advanced are INR 7,447 and INR 30,164. On top of that your payment gateway takes its cut, and because Shopify Payments is not available in India, Shopify adds a further 2 percent on Basic for using a third-party provider. Then the apps. For a small store the running cost is commonly somewhere between INR 4,000 and INR 15,000 a month plus the percentages, and the percentages are the part that grows with you.

Do I need a custom Shopify theme?

Usually not, and we will say so even though custom theme work is the better project for us. The Shopify Theme Store listed 1,326 themes when we last checked, of which 1,302 are paid, with prices on the browse page from 100 to 500 US dollars. With that much choice, a theme that fits your brand closely enough to customise almost always exists. A good one adjusted carefully tends to beat a custom build done to the same budget, because the money goes into your specific needs rather than into rebuilding things the theme already did well. A custom theme earns its cost when the store genuinely has to look unlike anything else on the platform, when you have an unusual merchandising requirement, or at Plus-level scale. Browse the theme store properly for an hour before you let anybody quote you one.

Can you migrate my store to Shopify?

Yes, and it is defined work rather than something that happens alongside the build. Products, variants, customers and order history move across, and so do the URLs, which is the part that gets fumbled most often. Every old product and collection address needs mapping to its Shopify equivalent, because sending everything to the homepage throws away whatever those pages had earned in search. We map them before launch and verify them after. Expect two to four weeks on top of the build depending on catalogue size and how clean the existing data is. Shopify also uses a fixed URL structure, with /products/ and /collections/ paths, which you cannot change, so the redirect map is not optional on any move.

Does Shopify work well for Indian payment gateways?

It works, and it costs you extra, and you should know both halves. Shopify Payments, the built-in product, is available in 41 countries and India is not among them, so every Indian store has to use a third-party provider such as Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree or CCAvenue. All of them integrate with Shopify and work fine. The catch is that Shopify charges an additional fee for using a provider that is not its own: 2 percent on Basic, 1 percent on Grow, 0.6 percent on Advanced and 0.2 percent on Plus. That sits on top of whatever your gateway charges, so an Indian seller on Basic is realistically paying around 4 percent of each order between the two. It is not a penalty and there is nothing you can do to avoid it, but it belongs in every comparison you make between Shopify and anything else, and it is the strongest single argument for moving up a plan as your turnover grows.

Which Shopify plan should I be on?

Work it out rather than guess, because the answer is a number. Moving from Basic to Grow costs about INR 5,453 more a month and saves one percent of revenue, so it starts paying for itself at roughly INR 5.5 lakh a month in sales. Moving from Grow to Advanced costs about INR 22,717 more and saves 0.4 percent, so that one turns over at around INR 57 lakh a month. Those are our calculations from Shopify’s published India prices, so check them against your own figures. The practical advice is to start on Basic unless you are already above the first threshold, and to put a reminder in the diary to re-check every quarter, because most stores that are overpaying are overpaying because nobody revisited the decision.

Is Shopify better than WooCommerce?

Neither is better in the abstract and we build both. Shopify is usually right when nobody in your business will own updates and security, when you want to be live quickly, and when your selling rules are ordinary. WooCommerce is usually right when you have unusual requirements, an existing WordPress site, or enough turnover that paying percentages forever costs more than hosting and maintaining your own. The Indian wrinkle is the third-party gateway fee above, which pushes the crossover point lower here than it would be in a country where Shopify Payments is available. We set out the other side of this on our WooCommerce development page, including what owning it actually costs.

What apps will I need and what do they cost?

Fewer than you will be offered. Most stores genuinely need a review app, something for email, and one app for whatever makes their business unusual. Everything else should wait until you can point at the problem it solves. App pricing is monthly and per app, which is how a store ends up with a bill nobody remembers agreeing to, so we fix the list before the build, total it, and write it down. We also check whether your theme or Shopify itself already does the job, because paying monthly for something you already have is more common than it should be.

Can Shopify handle a large catalogue?

Yes, comfortably, and this is rarely the constraint people expect it to be. Shopify handles large product counts without the database considerations you would think about on a self-hosted platform, because that is their problem rather than yours. Where large catalogues do create work is in merchandising: collection structure, filtering, search and how customers actually find things. That is design and configuration work rather than a platform limit, and it is worth budgeting for separately on any store above a few hundred products.

Can I sell internationally from India on Shopify?

Yes, and it is one of the better reasons to choose it. Multiple currencies, international shipping and market-specific pricing are handled well and without much fuss. The things that need real thought are not technical: which markets you can actually fulfil to, how duties and returns work for those customers, and what your delivery promise is. Those are business decisions with build consequences, so we settle them before launch rather than discovering them with the first overseas order.

What happens to my store if I stop paying Shopify?

The store goes offline. This is the honest cost of a hosted platform and it is worth being clear-eyed about: you are renting, and the shop closes when the rent stops. Your data remains exportable, so you are not locked out of your own products and customers, but the storefront itself is not something you keep. If permanence and ownership matter more to you than convenience, that is a genuine argument for a self-hosted platform, and we would rather you weighed it now than discovered it later.

Can you work on a Shopify store somebody else built?

Yes, and a good deal of our Shopify work is exactly that. We start by looking at what is there, because inherited stores usually carry apps nobody can account for, theme edits made directly in the published theme, and quite often a plan that stopped being the right one a year ago. That review is worth paying for on its own before anybody proposes changes, and it is covered by our website audit. Sometimes the answer is a tidy-up and a plan change rather than a rebuild, and we will tell you when that is the case.

Will my Shopify store rank well?

The platform is neither an advantage nor a handicap, whatever you have read. Shopify gives you a clean technical base and takes some decisions out of your hands, including the URL structure, which is fixed. What decides rankings is collection and product page content, how filtering is handled, and whether anybody is doing the work. That is separate from the build and we cover it on our ecommerce SEO page. What we do during the build is avoid creating problems, mainly by mapping redirects properly on a migration.

Does Shopify handle GST invoicing for India?

Shopify’s tax settings let you configure tax rates, but GST-compliant invoicing in the format Indian businesses need is generally handled either by an app or by your accounting system rather than by Shopify natively. We are designers and developers, not tax advisers, so the way we handle this is to set up whatever your accountant specifies and to raise it early rather than at launch. Ask your CA what they need on the invoice before the build starts, because retrofitting it is more annoying than building it in.

What is Shopify Plus and do I need it?

Plus is the enterprise tier, starting around INR 1,75,000 a month, and the honest answer for most businesses reading this page is no. What it buys is a lower third-party gateway fee at 0.2 percent, more control over the checkout, higher limits and dedicated support. The gateway fee alone means it starts making arithmetic sense at serious volume, and if you are anywhere near that level you will already know. If somebody is recommending Plus to a store doing a few lakh a month, ask them to show you the calculation.

Do you work with clients outside Delhi?

Yes. We are a Shopify development company India wide, based in Vikaspuri, West Delhi, and we work with clients across the rest of India and overseas in the UAE, the UK and the USA. Anyone looking for a Shopify developer in Delhi is welcome at the studio, and clients who would rather work with a Shopify design agency Delhi NCR based but meet over video are served exactly the same way. If you are after a Shopify expert India wide rather than one you can sit across a table from, that is the common case and it changes nothing. Most of our store builds run remotely and it makes no difference to the result.

Talk to Us About Your Store

Send us your product count, your monthly order volume and roughly what you turn over. That last number matters more on Shopify than on anything else, because it decides which plan you should be on and whether the platform is the cheaper option for you at all. We will do that arithmetic before quoting, and if WooCommerce comes out ahead we will tell you.
